Date: June 5, 2025
Host Country: Republic of Korea
Theme: #BeatPlasticPollution
World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5th, is a pivotal occasion to reflect on our planet’s health and our collective responsibility towards its preservation. In 2025, this day gains heightened significance as the Republic of Korea hosts the global celebrations in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, spotlighting the urgent issue of plastic pollution.
Plastic pollution has infiltrated every facet of our environment—from oceans and rivers to the air we breathe. An estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic waste enter aquatic ecosystems annually, posing severe threats to marine life and ecosystems. Microplastics have even found their way into our bodies, highlighting the pervasive nature of this crisis.
The 2025 theme, #BeatPlasticPollution, calls for collective action to reduce plastic waste through strategies like refusing single-use plastics, reusing items, and recycling materials. This initiative aligns with global efforts to establish a legally binding treaty aimed at ending plastic pollution, with negotiations set to continue in August 2025.
HOW YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE:
- Reduce Plastic Usage
Opt for reusable bags, bottles, and containers. Avoid products with excessive plastic packaging.
- Participate in Local Clean-Up Drives
Join community efforts to clean local beaches, parks, or streets. These activities not only remove existing waste but also raise awareness about the importance of keeping our surroundings clean.
- Support Sustainable Brands
Choose products from companies committed to sustainable practices and minimal plastic use. Supporting such brands encourages more businesses to adopt eco-friendly policies.
- Educate and Advocate
Share information about the impacts of plastic pollution and advocate for policies that promote environmental protection. Engage in discussions and encourage others to take action.
World Environment Day is a global event, celebrated by millions across over 150 countries.
This year, the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Environment has launched campaigns encouraging individuals to share their environmental protection pledges on social media using the hashtags #WorldEnvironmentDay and #BeatPlasticPollution. Additionally, a plogging campaign—picking up trash while jogging—is being promoted to engage communities in active environmental stewardship
As we observe World Environment Day 2025, it’s crucial to recognize that the fight against plastic pollution requires a united global effort. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to a larger impact. By embracing sustainable practices and supporting policies aimed at reducing plastic waste, we can work towards a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations.
