About the Unified Payments Interface (UPI)
What is UPI?
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a real-time, interoperable digital payment system that enables instant bank-to-bank fund transfers through mobile applications. Developed as an open and interoperable Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), UPI simplifies payments by replacing complex bank details with a secure Virtual Payment Address (VPA) or UPI ID.

Developed By
- Developer: National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
- Launch: UPI was piloted in April 2016 with 21 banks under the leadership of then RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan. Since then, its network has expanded to hundreds of participating banks.
- Objective: To create a seamless, interoperable and cashless digital payment ecosystem by simplifying retail payments, promoting financial inclusion and enabling frictionless Person-to-Person (P2P) and Person-to-Merchant (P2M) transactions.
How Does UPI Work?
- Payment Initiation: The payer enters the recipient’s UPI ID or scans a QR code through a UPI-enabled application such as a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP).
- User Authentication: The transaction request is routed through the UPI infrastructure, after which the payer authenticates the payment using their secure 4- or 6-digit UPI PIN.
- Bank Verification: The remitter bank verifies the transaction, including account details, available balance, transaction limits and relevant fraud-prevention parameters.
- Inter-Bank Routing: Once the transaction is approved, the NPCI switch routes the payment instruction to the beneficiary’s bank.
- Real-Time Settlement: The payer’s account is debited and the recipient’s account is credited almost instantly, followed by confirmation to both parties.
Key Features of UPI
- Virtual Payment Address (VPA/UPI ID): Enables payments without requiring users to share sensitive bank details such as account numbers and IFSC codes.
- 24×7 Real-Time Payments: Enables instant transactions throughout the year and is built on the infrastructure of instant-payment systems such as IMPS.
- Single App, Multiple Bank Accounts: Users can link and manage accounts from different banks through a single UPI application.
- Two-Factor Authentication: Combines device/SIM-based authentication with the UPI PIN to enhance transaction security.
- Advanced Functionalities: UPI has evolved to support features such as AutoPay mandates, UPI Lite, credit-line-based payments, overdraft account linking, invoice verification and voice-enabled/conversational payments.
Significance
UPI has emerged as a key pillar of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, transforming the country’s retail payment ecosystem through speed, interoperability, low transaction friction and wider financial inclusion. It has also strengthened India’s position as a global leader in real-time digital payments.
