The Indian Army has launched Operation Shiva 2025, mobilizing a robust security apparatus—over 8,500 troops supported by advanced technological assets—to safeguard the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, which runs from 3 July to 9 August.
Operation SHIVA is a high-altitude annual security initiative led by the Indian Army, aimed at ensuring the safe and smooth conduct of the Shri Amarnath Yatra in Jammu & Kashmir. It stands out as one of India’s most complex military-civilian coordination efforts to safeguard religious tourism.
It is launched by the Indian Army, in collaboration with civil administration, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and disaster response teams.
Objectives:
- Prevent terrorist threats and neutralize drone-based attacks during the pilgrimage.
- Provide real-time surveillance, medical support, and infrastructure reinforcement.
- Enhance coordination between the Army, CAPFs, disaster relief forces, and local authorities.
Key Features of Operation SHIVA 2025:
- Multi-Layered Security & Troop Deployment: Over 8,500 troops deployed along both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. A comprehensive counter-terrorism grid ensures layered security coverage.
- Aerial Surveillance & Drone Defense: More than 50 counter-drone (C-UAS) systems deployed. Real-time monitoring via UAV patrols, PTZ cameras, and electronic warfare tools. The pilgrimage corridor is designated a no-flying zone from 1 July to 10 August, prohibiting drones, balloons, and similar aircraft
- Infrastructure & Disaster Readiness: Army engineering units tasked with bridge repairs, path widening, and landslide prevention.
- Communication & Rapid Response: Specialized signal units, Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs), bomb disposal squads, and real-time drone-based tracking from Jammu to the Amarnath cave.
- Logistical Support: Emergency supplies to support over 25,000 people. Facilities include tent cities, helicopter evacuation, water stations, bulldozers, and pre-deployed rescue gear.
Operation Shiva reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to ensuring a smooth, secure, and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage experience for hundreds of thousands of devotees this season.
